Qualification Description
Certificate IV in Driving Instruction prepares students for a career as a professional driving instructor by developing advanced driving, instructional, and communication skills. The course focuses on safe driving practices, learner assessment, lesson planning, and compliance with regulatory and industry standards through a combination of theory and practical training.
To achieve this qualification, students must complete 11 or 12 units of competency, including:
5 core units
Car Instruction Pathway: 7 elective units from Group A (12 units total), or
Heavy Vehicle Instruction Pathway: 4 elective units from Group B, plus at least 1 unit from Group D and 1 unit from Group E (11 units total)
Elective pathways allow students to specialise in either car or heavy vehicle driving instruction, aligning the qualification with their intended instructional role.
Entry Requirements
To ensure learners can safely and effectively participate in training and assessment, the following requirements apply:
- Must hold a current Australian driver licence
- Meet the licensing eligibility requirements for the relevant licence class (e.g. MR, HR, HC)
- Meet the minimum age requirement
- Have sufficient language, literacy and numeracy skills to:
- Read and interpret road rules, workplace procedures, and safety signage
- Complete written assessments, logbooks, and workplace documentation
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, customers, and regulatory authorities
- An LLN assessment may be conducted prior to enrolment to identify support needs
- Be physically fit to safely operate a commercial vehicle
- Be able to comply with WHS requirements, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe manual handling practices
Intake and Duration
Intake:
Enrolments are available throughout the year. At commencement, each student is provided with an individual training plan that identifies the units to be completed, including any eligible Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) or credit transfer, and any required gap training.
Duration:
The course is delivered in two phases. Theory training and assessment is completed through a combination of online learning and in-class face-to-face sessions, with up to 60 days to complete.
Once theory is completed, students progress to face-to-face practical training and assessment, delivered over a minimum of 9 weeks. Completion time may vary depending on prior experience. Overall, the course is designed to be completed within 3 to 7 months in line with AQF requirements.

Pathways
Certificate IV in Driving Instruction (TLI412225) provides a pathway for career development as a professional driving instructor. Students who have completed TLI31222 – Certificate III in Driving Operations or a later qualification may wish to pursue a career as a driver instructor by enrolling in this course.
Upon successful completion, students may choose to:
- Work as a qualified driving instructor for cars or heavy vehicles
- Progress to higher-level qualifications within the Transport and Logistics Training Package
- Complete additional licensing, endorsements, or specialist units to support career advancement
- Pursue a career in Vocational Education and Training, as this course contains units from TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.
Employment Outcome
Graduates of the Certificate IV in Driving Instruction (TLI41225) can work or operate their own business as a Car or Heavy Vehicle Driving Instructor within their state. Employment is contingent on successfully completing all units of the qualification and meeting state-specific driving instructor licensing and registration requirements.
